The Mouse-Trak Tale
In 1984, Charles Robert McLaughlin was using a program called P-CAD to lay out circuits using a Mouse Systems 3-button mouse. Bob began to experience severe pain starting with his wrist, then working its way up his entire arm and into his neck. This pain is now referred to as Repetitive Stress Injury (RSI). As the pain became increasingly worse, Bob became concerned that it would cause a permanent injury.
Bob flew private airplanes and remembered seeing a trackball being used in an air traffic control center. He inquired as to where he could purchase a trackball for personal use, only to find out that trackballs had not been programmed to work with a PC. After some time, Bob invented a prototype that was not only comfortable but relieved the pain he had been feeling.
After only a week, Bob was not experiencing any pain after a full day of work using the new trackball. Bob’s friends began to ask questions about the device. Bob explained about the pain he was experiencing, only to find out that he was not alone, many people had silently suffered from Repetitive Stress Injury (RSI).
Bob’s Happy Ending: Mouse-Trak was invented and Itac Systems was established.
